Yanks and Bruney Agree To Deal
From the AP:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Reliever Brian Bruney and the New York Yankees agreed Friday to a $1.25 million, one-year contract, settling the team's last salary arbitration case.

The deal raised New York's projected opening-day payroll just above $198 million for 18 players with agreements. The Yankees still must negotiate with Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes and others who didn't have enough service time to be eligible for arbitration.

When they exchanged arbitration figures last week, Bruney asked for a raise from $725,000 to $1.55 million, and the Yankees offered $1.1 million.

The 26-year-old right-hander was 3-0 with a 1.73 ERA and one save in 31 relief appearances and one start last year. He was sidelined from April 25 to Aug. 1 with an injured right foot.

Bruney, projected to be the Yankees' primary setup reliever for Mariano Rivera, held opponents to a .153 batting average, the fifth-lowest in the major leagues among pitchers with 30 or more innings.

The Joe Torre Debate
After all the stuff we have heard from Joe Torre's new book, " The Yankee Years " how do you still feel about the former Yankees manager?

Yanks Sing Pettitte

In news that I think most of us expected the New York Yankees finished up their rotation today by signing Andy Pettitte to a 1 year deal. This gives the Yanks a rotation of Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Pettitte, Chamberlain. If healhty is looks as if the Yanks will have one of if not the best rotations in baseball.

Here is the AP Release:

According to the Associated Press, Pettitte has accepted a base salary of $5.5 million, with innings-pitched and days-on-the-roster incentives that could raise the value of the contract to $12 million.

The left-hander said repeatedly last year that he wanted to be in uniform when the Yankees officially complete their move across the street to the new Yankee Stadium, and has said that he does not see himself pitching in another uniform.

In 2008, Pettitte was 14-14 with a 4.54 ERA in 33 starts. The veteran has logged at least 200 innings in four straight seasons, and five of his last six. But he faltered down the stretch, going 2-7 with a 6.23 ERA over his last 11 starts -- including a victory over the Orioles in the final game at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 21.

In the time span following the Yankees' initial proposal to Pettitte, the club has signed free agents CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira for a combined $423.5 million.

Torre Blast Yankees In New Book!
Former Yanks skipper Joe "Class" Torre has blasted the organization that made his career. I am absolutly speachless, but I'm not surpised about anything anymore. Here is some information about the book:

According to a new book by Sports Illustrated baseball writer Tom Verducci, Torre was a bitter man by the time he left the Yankees in October of 2007, and he takes a few rips at the team that he led for 12 seasons.

In "The Yankee Years," due to be released on Feb. 3, Torre describes general manager Brian Cashman as a less than supportive ally who betrayed him on several fronts, and says that his star player, Alex Rodriguez, was often referred to by his teammates as "A-Fraud" and was obsessed with his perceived rival, shortstop Derek Jeter.

His departure after a magnificent reign in which he led the Yankees to four world championships and restored the franchise to its glory days was well-chronicled as it unfolded, but Torre does shed light in the book on several issues that also defined his legacy, perhaps one of the most poignant being when he discovered that Steinbrenner already knew of his prostate cancer diagnosis when Torre went to inform him of it. Torre doesn't say who told Steinbrenner of the diagnosis or if it came from the Yankees' medical staff, but it is clear that he was stunned by the revelation.

According to a source familiar with the book, Torre does not step out of character. He simply recites the facts as he saw them and does not unfairly disparage the Yankees. As has been reported, he reiterates the claim that Cashman did not stand up for him at the crucial meeting with the Steinbrenners in Tampa as the 2007 season wound down and the Yankee brass discussed whether to bring him back or not, even though publicly Cashman had let it be known that he wanted Torre back as manager.

According to the source familiar with the book, Torre confronted Cashman about his role in the meeting and the Yankee GM confirmed to him that he had offered no opinions to the Steinbrenners on whether they should upgrade their offer from the one-year deal to the two-year deal Torre wanted.

CF 2009 - Gardner or Melky?

Who do you think the Yanks start in CF come opening day? If I had a pick I would go with Brett Gardner based off his speed and defense. The Yankees do not have a lot of speed in their line-up and having Gardy bat ninth would only be a plus if he hits even a little bit. Who do you think the Yanks should turn to in CF?

Yanks a Landing Spot For Juan Cruz
Juan Cruz has found himself a victim of a tough economy. The Yankees really do not need to add a pitcher to their already very solid bull-pen, but it seems as if Cruz is an option. The only problem Cruz has faced in his career is his walk rate, which has dropped slightly over the last couple of seasons. If you look at the Yankees current roster I think you can make the argument that Cruz would fit the set-up role better then anyone the Yankees have now. Mark Melancon is not yet ready for late innings at the big league level and Brian Bruney or Jose Veras are not experienced enough for the role. Cruz will come at a cheap price and all in all it seems to make sense.

Would you want the Yankees to land Cruz?

Swisher Getting More Offers then Nady?
Theirs reports that have stated that Nick Swisher is drawing a lot more intrest then Xavier Nady. This does make sense considering Swisher is the younger of the two and unlike Nady is not in the final season of his contract. I do not expect Swisher to be traded unless the Yankees could reel back a starting pitcher and some youth.

Freddy Garcia Close To Deal With Yanks?
Rumors are floating around that SP Freddy Garcia could be close to choosing the New York Yankees over the New York Mets. Garcia is coming off of surgery and is expecting a Major League contract. Garcia would likely battle for the Yankees rotation as a fifth starter if he is ready to go in Spring. More to come as this story continues to develop!

UPDATE: Freddy Garcia has accepted a 1 year minor league contract with the New York Mets. The Yanks will still look to add a starter and it just seems like Andy Pettitte will still be the man.

Yanks Lock Up Nady, Cabrera
The New York Yankees locked up arbitration eligible OF's Xavier Nady and Melky Cabrera. Nady agreed to a 1 year 6.55 million dollar contract, while Melky received 1.4 million. Xavier has been the topic of trade discussion while Melky Cabrera will fight it out with Brett Gardner for the CF job in Spring Training.
